Online Teletherapy: One-to-one, in person, internet web conferencing with a highly trained Clinician, combined with at home exercises to reinforce the weekly online lesson. Internet web conferencing sessions are 45 minutes in length, one session per week. RW&C’s approach reinforces the weekly online lesson with the following at-home exercises:
Practice Sprints – Online tabletop practice exercises with performance metrics to track progress.
Tile Board – Online tile board to practice word sounds and reading / spelling skills.
Games – Online games with targeted objectives to practice recently learned skills. The games are fun and entertaining …. students are engaged!
All remediation, instruction and at home exercises are based on the proven Orton-Gillingham approach. The approach is intensive, structured, explicit, systematic, cumulative and multi-sensory. RW&C’s objective is to achieve improved reading, spelling and written expression skills.
In Person Remediation: One-to-one, in person remediation and instruction. While programming varies based on individual need, each program typically includes baseline testing, diagnostic instruction based on evaluation while focusing on the structure of language, and continuous progress monitoring. RW&C’s objective is to achieve improved reading and written expression skills through instruction based on the proven Orton-Gillingham methodology. The approach is intensive, structured, explicit, systematic, cumulative and multi-sensory. Research states four to five sessions per week are optimal for remediation retention and effectiveness. Session frequency recommendations will be provided once baseline data is analyzed. Sessions are 50 minutes in length and are scheduled no less than two sessions per week.
Screening for “At Risk” Reading Difficulty: Screening is a mechanism for the early detection of potential reading difficulties. The screening process involves formal testing, the results of which are normalized against a ‘same age’ population to determine if the individual is “at risk”. In addition, teachers of school age children can often provide additional qualitative information and background. RW&C recommends screening processes for individuals from Pre-K through adult ages if the individual struggles compared to their peers in pre-reading, reading, and written expression skills. Testing and Remediation Design: Formal testing identifies the individual’s strengths and weaknesses in order to develop a targeted treatment plan for intervention. It is important to note testing is but one step in the evaluation process, and by itself, does not result in a diagnosis.
Testing will focus on both written and spoken language skills which may include word recognition, decoding, spelling, phonological processing, fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, etc. The educational clinician may want to speak with parents and teachers to gain additional background information and insight.
Based on testing results, discussion with parents and teachers, and a diagnosis provided by a certified professional, RW&C will present a detailed, highly targeted, and comprehensive remediation recommendation. The remediation recommendation will focus on the specific skill gaps and weaknesses identified through the testing process.
